Mohammad Yusuf Petersen

About me
Assalāmu ʿalaykum. My name is Mohammad Yusuf Petersen, and teaching is my vocation. I completed my Ḥifẓ of the Qurʾān at Islamia Hifth Academy under Shaykh Firoz Mohammed, and went on to study the classical Islamic sciences at the Darun Naʿīm Institute and the Dār al-ʿUlūm al-ʿArabiyya al-Islāmiyya in Strand, where I qualified as an ʿĀlim. I am currently completing an Honours degree in Islamic Studies at the University of the Western Cape, and I lecture in Islamic Legal Theory and Ḥadīth at the Zahraa Institute.

My experience
I have been teaching since 2019, across a wide range of settings and levels — from young learners beginning their Islamic education, to adults studying the advanced Islamic sciences. I currently teach at GoodTree Quranic School, and have taught at Al-Huda Academy and Dār al-Tafawwuq, alongside private one-on-one tutoring. My particular focus is Islamic Studies and the sacred sciences — including ʿaqīdah, fiqh and Islamic legal theory, Ḥadīth, and the foundations of Arabic — guiding students toward a deeper and more confident understanding of their dīn.

My teaching style
Good teaching, I believe, joins two things: real depth in the subject and real care for the student. My approach is patient and encouraging. I aim to make lessons clear and accessible without watering down the tradition, so that a student understands not only what to do but why it matters. Beyond the syllabus, I care about tarbiyyah — the nurturing of character, sincerity, and a lasting love for the dīn. My hope is always that a student finishes not only more capable, but more connected to their faith.
